BELLYDANCE costuming help for self-consious girl!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?
hello!
my friend and i have an upcoming bellydance performance...the problem is we are clueless about the costuming. since we're doing a duet, we want it to look similar or - at least - be in the same style. there is a second problem, the reason why im asking this question. my friend is self-consious and doesnt want to show off her belly. i tried talking to her about it, but i respect her opinion and i dont want to push her.
so does ANYONE have any ideas about what we could wear the skirt and shimmy scarf part is not really a problem, but we need "top-help"...literaly. my friend has got a black top with long sleeves, but it doesnt look very oriental and it doesnt reall flatter the dance style. maybe she could wear a semi-transparent top and her choli over it (because ive got the same choli in a different color)
please help, any ideas are welcome but please no time wasters! if you need, i will add additional details

What style of bellydance are you performing? Is it a nightclub/cabaret style or is it more of a tribal style? Also how much of a budget do you have for purchasing either new costumes or materials to make them?
If your doing a nightclub/cabaret style of bellydance you may want to invest in some one piece dresses. Here's a link to Dahlal's site which carries many (but that doesn't mean you can't buy them elsewhere or make them):

If your performing more of a tribal (ATS) style or some sort of tribal fusion I'd recommend either choli's with long decorated front panels or ghawazee coats like this:

(These one's are really expensive but a ghawazee coat can be made fairly cheep if you sew it yourself (it's probably still cheaper to have a tailor make one for you than it is to buy it from this store but...)
Here's a few examples of Tribal style cholis that have stomach covers or are longer. They work great for tribal dancers who want a little more coverage but don't like the ghawazee coat (personally I think ghawazee coats are awesome but not everyone shares my sentiment)

Perhaps you could create some sort of decartive drape that you could both attach to your existing cholis which could be similar to the ones above.
If you can sew you may want to check out patterns by Madam X or Atia's Fashions. You could also get some of Dawn Devine Brown's costuming series books.
